Is Google Monopolzing Information or Are They Simply Providing The Most Cutting Edge Technologies On The Planet?

Posted on September 28, 2006

Ok, so the title of this blog post was merely an attention grabber but it does  mirror the sentiments of some. I do a lot of work with Google and, although there is a growing sense of hubris, I feel at the end of the day their is no one over at Google who is really out to do any harm to others and that they are simply acting within the confines of our economic framework.

In fact, to all the Microsoft haters out there, I am going on record as saying, "I do not think they are the evil empire!". They broke the rules, got punished for it, MOVE ON! (I digress).

I was on my way to work this morning listening to one of my favorite podcasts (the M show with John Wall) and he mentioned this:

I am not sure what I think of this yet but, I was hoping that I could get some comments. In fact, I am not going to say anything at all right now, I would prefer this post to be an invite for an open forum so, please send me your thoughts!

Yeah, what a noble cause. Buy Google and give it to the people. So they can complain that it doesn’t work anymore and the system’s broke and Google are jerks because they won’t do it for free.

I remember when it was called communism. Let Google make money, they deserve it. They built it. They pioneer based on their intelligence.

I love it when people hate a large corporation because of it’s success. It’s cute.

After some additional thought, the big hole in the concept is thinking that Google will not be able to eventually filter out clicks that are artificially generated. That and the fact that they can throttle the system as they please.

My end diagnosis is not good, I can see only three options: 1. They eventually scare too many people and face monopoly charges, 2. Something next generation appears and they implode in a flash of light, 3. A competitor rises up to share the market and the competition keeps things in check (I find that one hard to believe).

    Any other theories?

I fully agree that Google has the capacity to filter out these clicks (and I am sure they will). They have some of the brightest talent today and, there is little they cannot do (especially when it comes to their own system).

I think that Google may get so large that some may begin to point fingers and cry monopoly (they have already started) however, Google is playing nicely for the most part. Their support of the net-neutrality and the open source movements show that their ethics are sound and, working with them closely and being at their offices frequently has shown me they have managed to maintain this corporate culture throughout the organization.

As long as Google continues to provide us with valuable, cutting edge tools, I will be hard pressed to have too many bad things to say about them.

That being said, the standard that I hold Google to is very high!
