Really Small Big Ideas

Posted on August 2, 2007

I AM SICK A MARKETERS SAYING “I WANT THE BIG IDEA”

What the hell does that mean anyhow?

A really small “big idea”…

I have been a listener of Joseph Jaffe’s Across the Sound since the beginning, and just when I think I have heard enough of this renegade marketer, he hits me over the head with some slick marketing moves (the master of making waves is back).

I realize the iPhone for an episode initiative has been going on for a while and I have not been a part of the conversation. Well, Leesa Barnes’ audio comment has sprung me into the conversation (if you want to hear her comment you will just have to listen to ATS #86. If you are not an ATS fan, sorry :) You may want to check it out).

First of all, the iPhone for an episode sponsorship was obviously a steal for Chip Griffin of Custom Scoop, the river of sponsorship has flowed from podcast to podcast to blog (you are reading one of them right now, free advertising anyone) and back. Chip got much more than a single show sponsorship; he got the ability to sponsor a whole conversation. Obviously this is what Jaffe was setting up from the start.

Now…on to Leesa.

Leesa, I am calling you out.

I think you know he will get the laptop and I think that you want him to get it for the sake of your book, and I love you for it!

In fact, I am a few conversations away from putting my money where all the mouth’s of this conversation are. Not for the sake of Jaffe getting a Macbook, but for the sake of The Conversation. If I can find a way to make it happen, I will make it happen (or look like a fool, I have no problem with that either).

I love the idea of sponsoring a conversation. Nice take, Adam. Interesting implications as well.

I think it would be great to pick a relevant conversation and have your brand be associated with that. Of course, I have not idea how that would play out exactly :)

When I was listening to ATC when he announced the “iPhone for a show” propsal, I must say, the first person I thought would take his offer was Chip. I am long time listener of For Immediate Release and I can recite the old scripted Custom Scoop sponsorship blurb backwards and in my sleep. I was so impressed by when, after listener feedback, he joined the conversation with his “media monitoring minute” and has not looked back since. Chip has been so respectful of and engaged in dialogue with podcast/blogger audiences, it’s cool he got the chance to drive the conversation throughout an entire show.

I too am a fan of FIR and Chip does indeed get it!

It is great to watch as new marketing/PR/Advertising models unfold right in front of us.

Oh Adam, I just love a man who challenges me :) I would love to work towards sponsoring the conversation. Where do we start?

Well, we have to achieve two things.

    1. Get Jaffe his Macbook Pro 10% to charity
    2. Somehow make it lucrative for all involved in the conversation

The first part could, logistically be fairly simple, as it only requires money.

Even if my company (Morpheus Media) agreed to put up the 3000 give or take, that would not really be sponsoring the conversation (and would be less fun). I am not saying that we are in a position to do that, but I would have a much better case to make to get the money if I were to say, “We are not only sponsoring one podcast, we are sponsoring a relevant conversation that spans various blogs and podcasts”.

Imagine that, being able to sponsor a contextually relevant conversation through a cross section of media that is all somehow connected.

Maybe there is a way to raise money to sponsor ATS/Jaffe and at the same time give back to the community and all of the folks taking part in the conversation. I love Jaffe and ATS and would be happy to aid in the continuation/betterment of the show, but I am not sure I have the funds. That of course does not mean we cannot help….

We need to brainstorm a bit…

God come off it. Jaffe is hardly a renegade … a hack perhaps. And a cheap one at that … giving over whole episodes to get himself freebies. Tacky.

    Thanks for the comment.

I guess whether or not Jaffe is a renegade or hack is open for debate.

The important matter at hand is the whether or not it is tacky (as you say) to get sponsors for episodes. On this matter I have to disagree with you. This is how the media industry has always worked, and Jaffe is just getting a bit more creative with it.

I would love to hear more about why you think this is tacky.

    Adam

Dave is on a mission. I’m not sure who he is but he’s made a few similar comments elsewhere.

Perhaps if he got to know me better he’d realize how right he is :)
