Melanie Van Orden Speaks About How Podcasters Can Stop Genocide
Posted on October 27, 2007
So here I am, awaiting one of my favorite people, Melanie Van Orden speak about how podcasting can help stop Genocide. In my usual loud and obnoxious manner I said, "Melanie, I have never helped anyone in my life but myself, so the litmus test as to whether or not your talk was effective will be if I start now" (just kidding).
Melanie’s Ideas On How Blogging and Podcasting Can Stop The Genocide In Darfur
- 2.5 million displaced
- 3.5 going hungry
- Women who have been raped are ostracized from society
- Showed a clip from The Devil Came On Horseback
- We need to keep Darfur at the front of people’s minds, as opposed to what the mainstream media is doing
- It is important to remain hopeful
-
The government has been slow to take action
- they are talking unlike during Rowanda, however they need to put their money where their mouth is
-
What does this have to do with us as podcasters?
- A few hundred people have saves 200 thousand lives
-
Who do I know that has a wide reaching network?
- People in social media
- Bloggers need to get creative with the way they weave content into their blog that can be helpful
-
Big media is not doing a good job covering Darfur. We hear more about Michael Jackson etc.
- the only thing we have to gain is human rights
- Sign up at Save Darfur.org
- Donate Ad Space to Save Darfur
- Be A Witness.org
- Darfur Scores.org (sometimes you can shame senators and big media into action)

Thanks for the mention, we think it’s very important that people are aware of issues like the situation in Darfur; awareness is the first step to action. We just recently started writing and are trying to get the word out about our blog, not for personal reasons, but because we think we do a good job at providing fair, honest, and informative news and our primary goal is to raise awareness. Any help or tips you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I think all the thanks needs to go Melanie as she is the catalyst for this conversation. I am going to get her to chime in and we will brainstorm some ideas

Hey Nathan,
Sounds like you are looking to get other bloggers to join you in raising awareness about the genocide in Darfur. (It seems like you are already raising awareness among your blog readers.) If that is the case, I would love to talk to you more about it. Soon I’ll be starting an site called Bloggers Against Genocide that will give tips and advice on how bloggers can use their influence to stop the genocide in Darfur. I’ll also provide a place where bloggers will be able share ideas and tackle tough obstacles in utilizing their blogs for this cause. (Coming soon at http://www.bloggersagainstgenocide.org). Email me at melanie AT podcastersagainstgenocide.org to receive notification when the bloggers site is live.
