    Something I always think about is how we invest so much time building relationships in some of these networks-du-jour that may not still be around in a few years. Of course, what helps is that most of us connect on several different networks.

    Nice idea, but, even with the use of all of these open standards it’s foolish to think that the services that are using them won’t have even MORE access to what we do. Yes, even if the idea held up right, and we were able to control the privacy of what, say, facebook can show opposed to myspace – a lot of that data will still be mined, period. In this social network world the most important thing is how much data we give out, opposed to the amount of data we used to hold.

    Open social, openid, etc, etc… while open and put the control in our hands, they do create some sort of new way for us to be cross referenced.

    As for the idea of data portability, I think it’s a freaking great idea… but this seems to be the client side of open-social.
